The Glass Man

You slept through every thunderclap

that kept me shaking,

waking every hour.

Your clear cry floated

from lungs made of glass.

I blew on your cheek

as the hurricanes came,

your fluted bones ringing out

clear as bells

in the morning-proofed house

under splintering skies,

the bloated lavender night.

With every flash that struck you,

another crack patterned your bones.

I cried, clung, bubble-wrapped you

but could not keep you safe.

I thought about acts of fragility,

the echo of shattering glass.
