Snowdrops

Meeting again at the year’s end

with nothing between us

but silence and snow

and time passing ahead,

a stranger running late again—

I’d have given you words

like a fistful of ice

had I thought of the right ones

to wrap you,

your wasteland of freezing skin.

But I said nothing,

and neither did you.

Meeting again in the sort of silence

you could tuck in Pandora’s box

to be opened whenever you missed me.

You could choose utter chaos,

unhook the latch

and embrace me like an avalanche

in the sort of silence

that once crushed us alive

and whitened our hearts to snowdrops.

Our mouths could have thawed

the words from each other,

kissing in utter silence.

I could have just reddened your lip.

But I did nothing,

and neither did you.
